5 INSANELY CHEAP Destinations for Digital Nomads in 2024
Here are the best and most affordable Digital Nomad destinations in 2024 based on our experience of staying in South East Asia for 3 years.
We've curated a list of our top five insanely affordable destinations, each offering a unique blend of affordability and charm. Let's delve into these incredible places, where not only can you stretch your budget, but you can also experience the wonders of each place.
1. Danang, Vietnam: A very affordable gem
Danang, Vietnam, tops the list as the most affordable place we've encountered. It's quite different than the other places on this list, especially if you go there during the first few months of the year. Its cleanliness, beautiful landscapes, and pleasant ambiance make it stand out. This city, with its perfect blend of urban and tropical elements, is an ideal destination for those seeking a slightly cooler climate.
Last time we were staying in a nice Boutique Hotel, next to the beach with a rooftop pool and everything, for $500 per month. Vietnamese food is really good and affordable. You can get it for $1 or $2 per meal, and you can even order it to your home at that price. The Wi-Fi is generally good for working.
The downside of Danang is that there are only a few digital nomads and like-minded people you can meet, so it's not the best place to meet new friends and network. For example, there are not any gyms with nice equipment. But they have a nice beach where you can do bodyboarding and surfing
2. Siargao, Philippines: Surfers Paradise
Siargao, a small island in the Philippines, holds a special place in our hearts as one of Earth's most amazing spots. The surfing scene is unparalleled, making it an ideal place for both beginners and enthusiasts.
It’s not the most affordable place on this list, but they still have hostels for $150 per month. So if you are okay with staying in a shared room, then it can be a cheap place to stay for a month or two. On Airbnb, you find nice places to stay for around $500 to $700 per month. You still can have a private room in a guest house.
Food can be quite affordable in Siargao, but usually, we spend $10 to $20 per day for food.
The local atmosphere is laid-back, fostering connections and spontaneous adventures.
You will easily meet people anywhere you go, and you can do trips or other activities like surfing and skating with them. So, Siargao is a must-visit place for at least a few weeks.
But for those seeking a more business-focused environment, it may not be the top choice for extended stays. We didn't meet many people there who are doing online business. We saw a few people working on their laptops as we did, but it's not the same way as some of the next destinations on our list.
3. Chiang Mai, Thailand: A Great Digital Nomad Hub
Chiang Mai in Thailand is a digital nomad hotspot, and there's a good reason for it. It offers a perfect blend of affordability, great infrastructure, and a vibrant community of like-minded individuals. You'll find co-working spaces, bustling markets, and countless cafes where you can comfortably work on your laptop.
The cost of living in Chiang Mai is quite low; you can rent a modern and fully equipped apartment for around $400 to $600 per month. Street food and local dishes are delicious and affordable, usually costing around $2 to $3 per meal. The city also offers a variety of activities, from exploring temples to trekking in the nearby mountains.
Chiang Mai provides an excellent balance between work and leisure, making it a favorite among digital nomads.
4. Bali, Indonesia: Island Paradise for Nomads
Whether you prefer a quiet beach town or the vibrant atmosphere of Ubud, Bali has something for everyone. It's a beautiful island with a diverse landscape, from lush rice terraces to stunning beaches.
Bali offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly hostels to luxurious villas, catering to various budgets. You can find monthly rentals starting from $300 to $800, depending on your preferences and location.
The cost of living is relatively low, and you can enjoy delicious Indonesian cuisine for as little as $2 to $5 per meal.
Bali also has a thriving digital nomad community, with numerous co-working spaces and networking events.
5. Tbilisi, Georgia: A Hidden Gem of the Caucasus
Last but not least, our fifth destination is Tbilisi, Georgia. It might not be the first place that comes to mind for digital nomads, but it's a hidden gem in terms of affordability and charm.
The capital city of Georgia combines a rich history with a modern lifestyle. The cost of living in Tbilisi is remarkably low; you can find comfortable apartments for as little as $300 to $500 per month. The local cuisine is diverse and flavorful, and you can enjoy a meal at a restaurant for around $5 to $10.
Tbilisi offers unique experiences, from exploring ancient architecture to enjoying the vibrant arts and culture scene. Georgia's visa policies are also favorable for digital nomads, allowing many to stay for up to one year without a visa. If you're looking for an off-the-beaten-path destination with affordability and a welcoming atmosphere, Tbilisi is worth considering.
In conclusion, these five destinations – Danang, Siargao, Chiang Mai, Bali, and Tbilisi – offer not only affordability but also unique experiences for digital nomads. Whether you crave serene beaches, vibrant surf cultures, bustling city streets, tropical paradises, or hidden cultural charms, there's a destination tailored to every preference and budget.
